Navigating the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Framework through a Lens of Equity
Students come to school carrying the totality of their experiences in and out of schools. The trials and tribulations that students must overcome to be physically, emotionally, and mentally safe are critical barriers that compromise their ability to look outwards through hopeful eyes towards a destiny filled with promise and achievable dreams. Staggering statistics indicate that the disparity that exists between culturally diverse students and their school environment contributes to performance gaps and low achievement for underserved students. The WSCC model places onus on all stakeholders who are a part of the student educational experience to meet the needs of each student. Unpacking the invisible backpack carried by students into school everyday underscores the purpose of this session. Defining learning and health across the community through a lens of equity spurs the transformational change needed in schools to affirm high quality learning and social capital for all students. This session will address the needs and strategies through a trickle down and trickle up leadership frame. By the end of the session, participants will have deeply reflected on the question, “What do my students need to have a meaningful student experience that positions them best for academic and social success?” and will have identified actions and approaches needed to propagate innovative ways to holistically support all students to reach their potential.
