Portland Public Schools Presents Best Practices: Utilizing Virtual Teacher Networks to Support Distance Learning
Speakers
Jenny Withycombe · Portland Public Schools Cheyenne Freeman · Portland Public Schools Lexie Zimbelman · Portland Public Schools The complexity of the effects of COVID-19 on educational systems cannot be understated. When schools were asked to transition to distance learning in the Spring, everything was in chaos. We encouraged teachers to survive until the end of school. As we begin the new SY, PPS is starting 100% online. Guidance from our state assumes that what we are facing this Fall is completely different than the Spring - yet nothing has changed. Our teachers are still locked out of their classrooms, they are still caring for their own children and family members, and many still lack the digital literacy necessary to effectively implement health and physical education from a distance. This session will explore how PPS used VTNs (Virtual Teacher Networks) to increase the digital literacy skills of HPE teachers and designed universal templates of instruction to support ALL health and physical education teachers during this most extraordinary time. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to; 1) Outline and structure their own VTNs (Virtual Teacher Networks) using best practices shared during the workshop; 2) Outline and structure their own VTNs (Virtual Teacher Networks) using best practices shared during the workshop; and 3) Implement creative solutions for sharing centrally created materials with all staff.
